Actually, I’ve already done all of these things. I used to be Catholic. I’ve seen Passion of the Christ. I’ve read all of those books of the bible. I’m not an atheist because I reject the biblical stories. (Although I do reject them. They have no factual basis, and there are better life-lessons in the works of Dickens.) I am an atheist because I’m more content in the wonder of a naturalistic universe and unanswered questions than I would ever be in a dualistic contrived universe with non-sensical pat answers. But hey, whatever works for you.

I believe in your right to believe whatever your conscious determines, and in my right to freely disagree and to say so publicly. I believe that it is my right to resist efforts on your part to impose your beliefs on my society – no matter how well-intentioned. I believe that blind acceptance of any dogmatic creed, be it religious or secular, without thorough examination and introspection is intellectually dishonest and potentially harmful to the social contract. I believe claims made about personal gods are most likely the projections of the persons making the claims, and that trusting such claims is an abrogation of moral responsibility. And I believe that any creed – including this one – must be subject to amendment in the light of new information.
It is known.
